Memorial Expedition Returns

The memorial expedition to Sepamac, December 22 - 30, 2008, honoring those that lost their lives heading there last August 2008, was an occasion never to be forgotten.

Trees were planted honoring each of the people that died.

"In Sepamac we planted 9 pine trees around the school that was going to be built. The trees were planted very strategically to create a little grove. Eventually it will become a place of meditation within the grove. Walfred and Javier will remain present in the minds of the villagers, as they care for the trees and watch them grow; the villagers will remember the example they set. The tree that represents Javier is in the middle, and to the side is the tree that represents Walfred, to the other side is the tree that represents Miss Johnson. All the trees form a square, with Javier's tree in the middle... very symbolic of Javier."

There is something very interesting that happened when the trees were planted... all of us and the community feel that those honored this day will be the ones taking care of these trees."
(Martha Chen - CHOICE field director)

"Like my wife has said, it was a sweet spirit, lots of peace and tranquility. The leaders in the community all participated
and every one of them was there. There were more than 300 people and the expeditioners were very moved for the humility and generosity of the villagers. The love was very simply present and everyone was moved."

During this expedition, trees were planted, work was done on the school, garden plots were cleared, and dry latrines were built... but far and above the work that was accomplished, was the camaraderie and fun had by all. Hearts were touched and friendships forged.
