At last, children and adults can extend their education beyond elementary school in this new three-room schoolhouse. Last month, villagers gathered to celebrate this exciting event with cultural music, inspiring speeches, and a ceremonious "cutting of the ribbon". The school is equipped with an audiovisual room, multiple typewriters, and a library able to hold 5,000 books! This is unheard of in this area.
The district supervisor of education, Professor Oscar Garcias Humbler, shared the following during the celebration: "At our first meeting, I remember telling you that if we planted the seed we would one day be able to collect the harvest. Well, I am pleased to announce that the day has come to collect our harvest!"
This school will change the lives of hundreds of villagers and all future generations to come. It will serve numerous surrounding villages and those hoping to enhance their education. Several students have expressed their commitment to walk or bike long distances each day just to attend their new school.
We thank CHOICE donors, Singular Humanitarian, the Guatemalan government, LDSC, Spectrum Health, the CHOICE villagers and all others who helped to make this possible.
WAIT - IT'S NOT OVER! Please click HERE to watch a short video of the inauguration. Listen to what one student has to say about their new school and watch as students enter their new classroom for the first time. Be sure to turn the captions on by clicking the "CC" at the botton of the video.
